I went to Charleston, SC last weekend to meet up with several girls from an online infertility support group that I’ve been a part of since 2009. It’s hard to believe that I have been friends with these girls for four years and we had never met in person yet. Well, we finally changed that!
Unfortunately, not everyone could come and two that were planning to come couldn’t make it because of weather related flight cancellations. So, that was a major bummer and it ended up only being three of us, out of a total of nine girls.
Even though I was extremely disappointed about two of them not making it, I thoroughly enjoyed my time with the other two.
I can’t tell you enough how important this group of girls has been to me. I think some people think online relationships somehow don’t measure up, but I can tell you that it didn’t matter that our communication was online, we developed real, in-depth friendships and helped one another through some very difficult times. Also, in situations like these, sometimes you just can’t find others in your area that are going through the same things that you are and you desperately want to relate and bond with others with shared experiences. Once we moved our group to Facebook, we were able to keep up with each other’s daily lives through photos and updates as well.
This is only one of several groups that I belong to. Two others that are online and another that I recently started in my area where we meet face to face. If you’re in Southwest Virginia, see this page for more information.
If you are suffering from infertility or whatever else, I highly encourage you to seek out a support group. Not only has it helped me, but I’ve gained some amazing new friends.
